Ruckus in House over police action as Nitish slams RJD
Patna: The opposition on Tuesday stormed the well of the House and created a ruckus over the police lathicharge on protesting chowkidars and dafadars on Monday. CM Nitish Kumar reminded the opposition of its reduced strength compared to the 202 MLAs of the ruling NDA and asked RJD’s Bhai Birendra not to create “nuisance as they had done nothing for anyone during their regime”.
The CM termed the opposition’s statements baseless. “While you (RJD) were in power, you did nothing. We fuelled the fire of development in Bihar. Bihar is now progressing rapidly. The opposition is making meaningless statements. People wouldn’t leave their homes in the evening during their rule. We kept them together twice, but when they started creating trouble, we threw them out. Now we will never go with them,” Nitish said.
Speaker Prem Kumar summoned marshals and ordered them to remove placards from protesting members. Parliamentary affairs minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary assured the House that the govt would take the issue of chowkidars and dafadars seriously.
As proceedings began, RJD MLA Kumar Sarvjeet raised the lathicharge issue. Members also shouted slogans such as “lathi, goli ki sarkar nahi chalegi”.
Choudhary said if the govt had been against the protest, it would have stopped it. “The govt will consider their demands. As far as the chowkidars and dafadars are concerned, the decision taken by the Nitish Kumar govt earlier is historic. If they have any demands, the govt will talk to them,” he said.
He added that the right to protest did not permit disruption of public order. “Causing inconvenience to the common citizens and damaging govt property is not a part of peaceful demonstration,” the minister said.
5% for EWS in STET: BJP MLA Mithilesh Tiwari demanded 5% relaxation in qualifying marks for economically weaker section (EWS) candidates in the Secondary Teachers Eligibility Test (STET), citing a Sept 16, 2025 Patna high court direction to the govt. Education minister Sunil Kumar said there is a provision of 10% for EWS applicable in Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE). “We will review the high court order/direction and if there are any shortcomings in the govt's policy, we will take action accordingly,” he said.
Shortage of computer teachers: Saharsa MLA I P Gupta said the state faces a shortage of computer teachers despite arrangements for computer education in all govt schools from classes 6 to 10. The education minister said the govt had prioritised appointments of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics teachers and would address the shortage of computer teachers subsequently. CPI(ML) MLA Sandeep Saurabh claimed there is a shortage of 26,000 computer teachers, while only 460 vacancies have been announced.
The minister said more than 45,000 teachers will be appointed in TRE-4, including 407 computer teachers. So far, 8,553 computer teachers have been appointed. On imbalance in student-teacher ratio, he said postings are made by a committee headed by the DMs and districts will be instructed to correct disparities so that no school has excess or shortage of teachers.
