Political science gains popularity in state, yet 150 teachers await posting

Patna: Political science remains one of the most popular subjects in universities and colleges across Bihar, attracting a large number of students every year. Yet, despite this high demand, there is an acute shortage of teachers in the discipline. Ironically, more than 150 political science teachers recruited through the Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC) over eight months ago are still awaiting their postings in the universities allotted to them.

All these candidates had applied for the post of assistant professor in response to the BSUSC advertisement issued in 2020. After a gap of nearly five years, interviews were conducted from June 17 to June 21, 2025, and the results were declared on June 24. The university-wise allotment of selected candidates was completed on July 4 last year, following which the commission forwarded the list of recommended candidates to the state govt in the first week of Aug.


Since then, the selected candidates have been running from pillar to post to secure their postings as assistant professors in their respective universities. However, the authorities of the universities concerned have paid little attention to their grievances. According to the candidates, they are repeatedly informed that their teaching experience certificates are under verification, even though only about 10 to 15% of the selected aspirants were appointed on the basis of experience.

The aggrieved candidates pointed out that some among them, including Sanjay Kumar, Birendra Kumar and Sunita Agrawal, are nearing the age of 60. They fear that any further delay in posting would leave them with less than five years of service in their respective institutions. They also said that state rural works minister Ashok Chaudhary (born 1968) has recently secured his posting at A N College under Patliputra University.

While a few universities have allowed selected teachers to join after completing due screening procedures, six universities — Patna University, L N Mithila University, Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, Munger University, Jaya Prakash University and Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University — have not yet posted the selected candidates in their colleges or postgraduate departments.

Registrars of some universities, when contacted, said verification of experience certificates submitted by candidates from the institutions concerned is a time-consuming process. “In Patna University, the acting vice-chancellor has sought the chancellor’s permission to post teachers through a draw of lots,” said PU registrar Shalini.

The frustrated candidates have urged the chancellor to intervene and expedite the posting process at the earliest, stating that the prolonged delay is causing them unnecessary mental agony.
