PATNA: In a bid to unite the opposition parties ahead of Lok Sabha elections next year, chief minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday met two prominent Left leaders - CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI general secretary D Raja - in New Delhi.

The CM refused to divulge any details about the meeting he had with the Left leaders. "Nothing special took place. There was no specific conversation as such," the CM told mediapersons in the national capital. "We are working (for opposition unity) and holding talks with various parties," he added.

Yechury said the process for opposition unity has gathered momentum. He appealed to all secular forces to come on a single platform in a bid to "save the country, constitution and the democracy". "Talks with various parties are on, and the process has rather gathered momentum," Yechury told reporters after his meeting with Nitish.

He didn't rule out the possibility of formation of a third front, saying it is formed only after the elections as the past records say.

Raja said the unity among the secular-democratic forces was a must to "protect democracy and the people" of the country. "Had a meeting with Nitish to discuss broad issues of opposition unity against RSS-BJP. Country is in turmoil and all sections of the society are vocal against BJP misrule. Unity of secular-democratic forces is a must to protect our democracy and people," Raja tweeted.
