Newly married transport constable killed on duty in Arwal accident
Patna: A 28-year-old constable working with Bihar transport department’s mobile squad (chalant dasta) died in a road accident while he, along the team, was carrying out a routine vehicle-checking on NH-139 in Arwal district late Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Mukesh Kumar, son of Manager Yadav, and a resident of Pratapnagar village under Dumraon police station area in Buxar district.
Mukesh had married eight months ago, and his wife, Munni Kumari, is also a constable posted with the transport department in Bhagalpur.
Police said the accident took place near Balidad Bazar in Mehendia police station area, while the team was engaged in checking vehicles for traffic violations and was issuing a ‘challan’ to a truck driver for overloading his vehicle with sweet potatoes.
During this, a gravel-laden truck approaching at high speed from Aurangabad side suddenly lost control and collided with a parked truck on the roadside.
According to police, the impact of the collision pushed the stationary truck straight into the department’s SUV, in which motor vehicle inspector (MVI) Vipul Kumar was seated. Constable Mukesh was caught between the SUV and the truck, suffering severe injuries that resulted in his death on the spot.
Another constable, Gautam Kumar, and the truck driver, Praveen Yadav, were seriously injured, while the MVI was also hurt in the accident. Local residents and police personnel came to their aid and rushed them to sadar hospital in Arwal for treatment. After receiving first aid, the truck driver was referred to Patna for advanced medical care.
Police seized both the vehicles involved in the collision. Traffic movement on the busy NH-139 was temporarily disrupted, but it was restored soon after the vehicles were removed from the road.
On receiving information about the accident, Arwal DSP Kriti Kamal arrived at the spot and began an on-site investigation. “The deceased constable’s body was sent to the district hospital for the postmortem and his family was informed,” she said.
SHO, Chandan Kumar Jha, told TOI that the truck driver, who lost control of his vehicle, got stuck in the front portion after the accident. “He lost both his legs and was in a critical condition. We had to cut the front compartment of the vehicle with a gas cutter and then retrieve him. He was referred to the PMCH. The constable Mukesh died on the spot,” he said.
The district administration ordered an inquiry to know the exact cause of the accident, including over speed and loss of vehicle control.
The tragedy left constable Mukesh’s family in deep grief.
