Nalanda to get AI traffic system

Biharsharif: After more than 30 people were killed and over 70 injured in road accidents across Nalanda in the past 15 days, the transport department has decided to introduce an Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) at major roads and accident-prone intersections to curb rising fatalities.

Under the initiative, AI-powered surveillance systems and smart monitoring cameras will be installed at identified black spots and busy stretches to improve traffic regulation and strengthen enforcement.

Nalanda district transport officer Ranjeet Kumar said the exercise was being carried out on the directions of the state transport commissioner. “Locations prone to accidents are being identified in detail. Busy stretches witnessing heavy vehicular movement and frequent violations are also being shortlisted for implementation of the system,” he said on Friday.

Officials said the AI-enabled system would monitor vehicle speed, detect violations, identify drivers through facial recognition and support automatic e-challan generation, reducing dependence on manual enforcement.

The move follows a fresh fatal accident on Thursday evening when Narendra Kumar (20) died after a speeding pickup van hit his motorcycle near Pachrukhi Mor under Khudaganj police station area. His cousin sustained critical injuries.

Khudaganj SHO Durgesh Gahlot said the driver fled leaving behind the vehicle, which was later seized by police.
