PATNA: Director general of police (DGP) Gupteshwar Pandey on Sunday said strict action would be taken against those involved in recent lynching cases in Patna and elsewhere in the state. The DGP’s remark came following three lynching incidents in Patna district within a week.
“Those found involved in lynching cases will be charged with
murder,” the DGP said. Addressing police officers and commoners through a social media platform, the DGP called upon the people not to believe in rumours of child thefts. He said some anti-social elements were spreading these rumours as part of a planned conspiracy.
The DGP asked police officers, mukhiyas, sarpanchs, ward members and chowkidars to come forward in countering such rumours. “No incident of child theft had been reported in the state in the recent days. Still, people are being lynched on suspicion of child theft,” he said.
The DM asked the SHOs to update their ‘goonda registers’ by including the names of people who create law and order problem during festivals. He also asked the SHOs to remain alert to avoid any untoward incident during Monday’s Eid-ul-Zuha celebrations.
“One won’t get passport, character certificate and arms licence if his or her name figures in the goonda register,” he said. “Youths should also keep a watch on anti-social elements and assist police in nabbing the wrongdoers,” the DGP added.
