Patna: It was a huge respite for the people here from the prolonged sultry weather conditions after mild showers accompanied by thundershower lashed the city in the evening. While the early morning of Sunday also witnessed some rainfall, the hot and humid conditions returned as the day progressed. The weather, however, changed in the evening and thundershower lashed the city and several other parts of the state.

This weather activity was due to the presence of a cyclonic circulation over northern parts of Bihar and adjoining sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. From this system a trough is extending up to West Bengal hovering over Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, says an IMD Delhi release.

There are reports of hailstorm accompanied by rain in several districts of the state, especially in northwest and north-eastern Bihar. The districts which witnessed good amount of pre-monsoon showers along with thunderstorm on Sunday were Purnia, Katihar, Araria, Kishanganj and Bhagalpur, state IMD sources said.

Intense humidity coupled with soaring temperature had made life miserable for the people here. Following the light rain, temperatures also dropped a few notches and the weather became pleasant by evening. This kind of weather activity is normally witnessed in the afternoon or early evening hours when the temperature crosses 40 degrees Celsius, especially when the monsoon is active in the country, said Met sources.

"It was a pre-monsoon shower. With the onset of monsoon over Kerala only three days back and its normal advancement rate, there has been lot of moisture incursion in the atmosphere. In fact, it is almost at our doorstep at the central Bay. The state will continue to experience such pre-monsoon showers at regular intervals if the advancement rate remains normal," said state IMD director A K Sen here on Sunday.

The Delhi IMD release also mentions that conditions are favourable for further advancement of SW Monsoon into some more parts of central and north Bay of Bengal, northeastern states, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkin in the next two days.

"There is an east-west trough extending from Punjab region up to West Bengal across the Indo-Gangetic plains. Accordingly, we can expect scattered rain, thundershowers and thunderstorm activity over north-western plains, including Delhi and foothills of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar," says a .weather bulletin issued by Skymet.
