Less than one-third of state teachers clear competency test
Patna: Less than one-third of schoolteachers in the state have qualified the state-level competency test, Sakshamta Pariksha IV, the results of which were announced on Saturday.
Declaring the results of the fourth phase of the test, Bihar School Examination Board chairman Anand Kishor said 4,932 teachers qualified out of 14,936 candidates who appeared. The overall pass percentage stood at 33.02%.
Teachers who cleared the test will now be granted the status of state govt employees, a long-pending demand of teachers appointed through local bodies.
Kishor said that at the primary level (classes I to V), 4,182 candidates passed out of 13,726, recording a pass percentage of 30.47%. At the middle school level (classes 6 to 8), 266 of 387 candidates qualified, with a success rate of 68.73%. For secondary classes (9 and 10), 354 of 592 candidates were declared successful, marking a pass rate of 59.80%. At the senior secondary level (classes 11 and 12), 130 out of 231 candidates qualified, translating to 56.28%.
The fourth phase of the competency test was conducted between Sept and Oct 2025, with examinations held on multiple dates for different subjects. The social science paper scheduled for Oct 12 was cancelled due to technical reasons and was held later on the same date. The fifth and final phase of the competency test will be conducted between Jan and Feb next year, the chairman said.
The board clarified that the results are provisional and that the education department will conduct counselling for all qualified candidates. Details related to counselling will be shared separately.
BSEB also launched an online document verification system, allowing verification of certificates and mark sheets related to matriculation, intermediate examinations, teacher eligibility tests, DElEd and competency tests.
The pass percentage in the fourth phase reflects a continuing decline from earlier rounds. While the first phase held in early 2024 recorded a pass rate of around 94%, the second phase saw 81% of candidates qualify. In the third phase, conducted in July 2025, only about 32% were successful.
Bihar currently has around 3,68,000 locally appointed teachers. Of these, about 2,66,786 have already cleared earlier phases and obtained state employee status, while nearly 80,000 are still in the process of qualifying through the remaining phases, sources said.
