Jharkhand student dies by suicide in hostel room at CNLU
Patna: A 23-year-old final-year LLM student of Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) died by suicide in his hostel room on Tuesday. The student was identified as Mayank Raj, son of Rajesh Kumar and a resident of Rohini Colony under Khalari police station in Ranchi (Jharkhand). Police have launched an inquiry after recovering a suicide note citing relationship-related stress. The incident came to light after a staff of the Rajendra Prasad Boys’ Hostel found Mayank hanging from the window of his room in the afternoon, and informed the authorities.
CNLU registrar S P Singh on Wednesday said that after receiving the news of the shocking incident, the university administration accompanied by the resident doctor and medical staff rushed the student to Medanta Hospital at Kankarbagh, where doctors declared him dead.
Upon receiving information, a police team from Jakkanpur police station, along with a forensic science laboratory (FSL) team, reached the hostel and secured the area. During a search of the room, they recovered a suicide note, an iPhone, an iPad, an ID card and other documents. The suicide note reportedly mentioned emotional distress linked to a relationship with his girlfriend, which investigators believe may have triggered the incident. The contents of the letter were shared with the family. Mayank’s family members reached Patna after being informed. His mother, Madhu, recorded her statement and expressed doubts about the circumstances of his death.
“A suicide note was recovered in which the victim mentioned a girl he loved. A case of unnatural death has been registered. We are probing all angles, including personal reasons indicated in the note, forensic evidence from the spot and any other possible factors,” said Rituraj Kumar Singh, SHO of Jakkanpur police station.
Later, a condolence meeting was held under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor Faizan Mustafa in which teachers, staff and students offered prayers and paid tribute to the departed soul.
Expressing his heartfelt grief on the tragic loss of one of the university’s bright and promising students, the VC appealed to all students that, in times of distress or emotional difficulty, they should not hesitate to seek support from their faculty members, parents, peer groups, hostel staff, friends, or the university administration. He further urged students to refrain from taking any extreme or life-threatening steps.
The incident occurred amid ongoing mid-semester examinations. In view of the incident, the mid-semester exam scheduled on Feb 25 for 4th and 5th year was shifted to Feb 27 and 28, respectively, whereas the mid-semester exam scheduled for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year on Feb 25 was shifted to March 9.
