HC seeks report on 640 acre land for veterinary college

PATNA: The

Patna

high court on Friday ordered principal secretary, revenue and land reforms department, to file a detailed counter affidavit on the distribution of 640 acre land actually acquired for the

Bihar Veterinary College

in Patna in 1926.

Petitioner Vikash Chandra alias Guddu Baba, in his PIL, has alleged that huge chunk of the land had been encroached upon. The next hearing in the case is on September 10.

The division bench of Chief Justice MR Shah and Justice Ravi Ranjan got furious to know that a part of the land was given for establishing a bicycle factory, which ceased to exist in 1950 and the government allotted the plot later to someone else. The petitioner said around 20 acre of the land was given to a cooperative society of MPs and MLAs on the condition that they won’t take government quarters. But even after expiry of the lease, they have not moved and, instead, their plots have been sold to others for constructing buildings.

University vice-chancellor Rameshwar Singh and Patna DM Kumar Ravi were also present during the hearing. When asked by the court, Singh said some quarters of the university had been locked for the last several years and the keys were not with them. To this, the court ordered the DM to take necessary action for handing over the possession of the quarters to the university administration.
