Ghatora Wetland in Bhagalpur emerges as strong contender for Ramsar Site status
Bhagalpur: The possibility of Ghatora Wetland, located between Gouripur and Narayanpur in Bihpur block of Naugachia sub-division in Bhagalpur district, being included among internationally recognised Ramsar Sites has brightened following recent visits by birders, Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) teams and forest officials.
The Ramsar Convention, adopted in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, identifies wetlands of international importance, especially as habitats for waterfowl. Ghatora Wetland is now being actively considered under these criteria due to its growing ecological significance.
Spread across 6-7km with an area of around 1,120 acres, the wetland has, over the past few years, become a favoured winter destination for both Siberian migratory birds and resident species for nearly five months each year. Birdwatchers have recorded 65-70 bird species, including several species of Siberian birds and geese.
Recently, birders along with senior forest department officials visited the wetland, often referred to as ‘Mini Chilika Lake’ due to its resemblance to the world-famous Chilika Lake in Odisha. The wetland attracts migratory birds from Siberia, a region known for its severe winters with average temperatures around -25°C, making survival difficult for many bird species during that season.
Coordinator of AWC Bihar chapter and bird specialist Deepak Kumar Jhunnu explained the significance of Ramsar sites, saying they are selected for their global importance in conserving biodiversity, water birds, ecological balance and sustainable livelihoods, while serving as critical habitats for migratory species and unique ecosystems.
“The nominated wetlands gain national and international status, symbolising a commitment to maintaining ecological character that offers vital ecosystem services including groundwater recharge, flood regulation, climate control and support for local economies,” Jhunnu said. He added that designated Ramsar Sites form the world’s largest network of protected areas, covering coastal, inland, natural and human-made wetlands.
There are nearly 2,500 Ramsar Sites worldwide with India having 96 so far, including Chilika Lake. Jhunnu said Ghatora Wetland meets international standards, with 65-70 migratory bird species recorded so far.
Species sighted include Red Naped Ibis, Plain Prinia, Brahminy Starling, White Throated Kingfisher, Little Egret, Red-wattled Lapwing, Red Crested Pochard, Black Tailed Godwit, Greylag Goose, Gadwall, Garganey, Northern Pintail, Pied Avocet, Bar-headed Goose, Osprey and Hen Harrier, among others.
Three species – Hen Harrier, Lesser Black Backed Gull and Ruddy Breasted Crake – were recorded at the wetland for the first time, generating strong interest among birders and specialists. Jhunnu said nearly 80% of birds recorded were migratory while 20% were resident species.
A team, including the chief conservator of forest and state nodal officer of AWC, along with birders and nature conservationists, visited the wetland to assess its potential for Ramsar Site recognition.
