Patna: The railways has installed face recognition systems (FRS) at key stations under the Samastipur division of the East Central Railway (ECR) to enhance passenger safety and modernise operations.
Samastipur divisional railway manager (DRM) Jyoti Prakash Mishra said the system is operational at most major stations in the division, enabling authorities to identify suspicious individuals and strengthen security monitoring. The initiative aims to ensure safer travel for thousands of passengers using the network daily.
The FRS cameras, linked to the national crime database, capture facial images and generate alerts for Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel monitoring CCTV feeds if any suspect is detected on station premises.
Along with facial recognition, the division has upgraded its CCTV surveillance infrastructure. All cameras are now linked to a central control room in Samastipur, allowing real-time monitoring in and around stations. This integration is expected to help security personnel respond swiftly to untoward incidents and keep a close watch on undesirable elements, the DRM said.
Key stations such as Darbhanga, Raxaul, Narkatiaganj and Saharsa have been prioritised for security upgrades and passenger amenity improvements. These stations have seen enhanced facilities to make travel more convenient and secure, Mishra added.
Meanwhile, the division has made progress in signalling and telecommunications. Advanced systems, including data loggers and simulation matrix systems, have been implemented, improving operational efficiency and safety, Samastipur PRO R K Singh said.
Passenger information systems have also been modernised, with coach indication boards and train indication boards installed at stations including Samastipur, Muzaffarpur and Nirmali, ensuring better communication with passengers, he added.
To further improve passenger convenience, major stations now offer Wi-Fi services, hassle-free ticket booking options and a higher number of automatic ticket vending machines. These measures are aimed at reducing queues and enhancing the overall travel experience, the PRO said.
