BAU develops drought-resistant paddy variety 'Sabour Samrat'

Patna: Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) has developed a new high-yielding paddy variety, ‘Sabour Samrat’, offering fresh hope to farmers, particularly in drought-prone regions. The variety promises higher productivity with reduced water and fertilizer requirements, making it a cost-effective option for cultivation.

According to scientists, ‘Sabour Samrat’ has a maximum yield potential of up to 90 quintals per hectare, with an average yield of 55–60 quintals per hectare. It was recently recommended for cultivation in several states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, Gujarat, Haryana, and Punjab, during the 61st annual meeting of the All India Rice Improvement Project.

The variety’s adaptability to diverse climatic conditions and its suitability for direct seeding eliminate the need for traditional transplantation, saving both time and labour. Officials said it produces nearly 1.5 times higher yield compared to conventional varieties.

‘Sabour Samrat’ matures within 115–120 days and grows to a height of 90–95 cm, reducing the risk of lodging. Each plant produces 15–20 tillers, with panicles measuring 27–30 cm and containing 270–350 golden grains. With milling recovery exceeding 65%, its rice quality is comparable to the popular ‘Rajendra Bhagwati’ variety.

Developed by scientist Prakash Singh and team, the variety has undergone three years of multi-state trials with encouraging results. It is also resistant to major diseases and pests. Seeds will be available from next year at BAU centres in Rohtas and Patna.
