PATNA: In the centenary year of Patna Law College, its Alumni Association held a meeting on the college premises on Sunday for reviving its old pristine glory, save its crumbling edifice and take it to the level of premier law colleges of India.
The day was an emotional one for its alumni, including high court judges, jurists, lawyers and professionals who have carved their niche in different fields, as they remembered the old days in college, founded by a jurist and its first principal, the late Atma Ram, in July 1909.
The Patna Law College was once synonymous with Patna University and its alumni includes two Chief Justices of India, Justice B P Sinha and Justice L M Sharma, attorney general Lal Narain Sinha, chief justices of different high courts, judges of Patna High Court and other high courts, eminent jurists and lawyers, said Justice Shivakirti Singh of Patna HC. He suggested constitution of a core committee and different sub-committees of the association for centenary celebrations of the college on a grand scale. He called for five years law course in the college and creation of a website of the association. He recounted that his father and the then president of association Justice Shambhu Prasad Singh, used to hold its meeting regularly.
Justice Mihir Kumar Jha stressed on serious measures to revive the college with appointment of permanent faculties. Justice Samarendra Pratap Singh said efforts are on to establish Justice K B N Singh Research Library on College premises to provide teaching and research materials in all the 24 subjects taught here. Justice K K Mandal recounted the contribution of the college.
Constitutional lawyer Shyama Prasad Mukherjee said, "I learnt art of speaking, developing friendship and leadership quality here." An alumni and Patna Central MLA, Arun Kumar Sinha, promised financial help to improve the college.
Association president Devendra Kumar Sinha delivered the welcome speech and its secretary, Arvind Ujjwal, gave vote of thanks.
