Patna: The state transport department is set to roll out a comprehensive Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) aimed at creating a smart, technology-driven and safer traffic ecosystem across the state.
The ambitious project will deploy advanced technologies, including AI-powered systems, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, adaptive traffic signalling and an integrated command and control centre to tackle rising traffic congestion, violations and road accidents more effectively.
Under the proposed ITMS, ANPR cameras will be installed at more than 500 critical locations, including major junctions, accident-prone stretches on state highways and mining areas. These cameras will automatically detect traffic rule violations and issue e-challans, with the core objective of promoting awareness and ensuring stricter compliance with traffic rules among citizens.
A key stakeholder consultation meeting was held on Tuesday at the Visvesvaraya Bhavan auditorium, where the transport department engaged with 42 leading companies, industry experts, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), system integrators and AI-based technology firms from India and abroad.
Participants shared suggestions and global experiences on the project’s structure, technical framework, implementation model and use of modern equipment. Special focus was given to developing a sustainable Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with a viable revenue-sharing mechanism. Officials stressed the need for financial sustainability with a long-term, 10-year operation and maintenance period.
Bihar development commissioner Mihir Kumar Singh described the ITMS as a significant step towards building a modern, technology-based traffic management system that will substantially enhance road safety in the state.
Transport secretary Raj Kumar said the system would play a crucial role in reducing accidents by enforcing traffic discipline through automated monitoring and e-challans. “After evaluating the valuable inputs received during the Expression of Interest (EOI) process and the stakeholder meeting, the department will soon issue a detailed Request for Proposal (RFP). An implementing agency will then be selected as per govt rules,” he added.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including principal secretary, urban development and housing department, Vinay Kumar; additional director general of police (traffic), Sudhanshu Kumar; state transport commissioner Arif Ahsan and additional secretary, transport department, Praveen Kumar, among others.
