Adani visits site as Rs30,000-crore thermal power project gathers pace in Bhagalpur
Bhagalpur: In a major push towards the establishment of the proposed 2,400MW ultra super critical thermal power plant (USCTPP) by Adani Power Limited (APL), Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani visited the project site at Sirmatpur village in Pirpainti under Bhagalpur’s Kahalgaon subdivision on Sunday to review the progress of the project. During his visit, he planted saplings at the site and met local officials and peoples’ representatives.
The visit is being seen as a major step towards expediting work related to the power generation project and exploring the possibility of establishing ancillary projects in the vicinity of the USCTPP. The plant is being set up under the design, build, finance, own and operate (DBFOO) model with an investment of Rs 30,000 crore.
APL had received a letter of intent (LoI) from Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) in Aug 2025 to supply 2,274MW of power to North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (NBPDCL) and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL) from the upcoming plant at Pirpainti.
As part of the contract, APL will supply electricity from the greenfield 2,400MW USCTPP to the state. The first unit will be commissioned within 48 months of the approval date and the last unit within 60 months of the approval date, sources said, adding that the plant will receive fuel through the allocated coal linkage.
The project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment for more than 10,000 people during the construction phase and nearly 3,000 once the USCTPP becomes operational. Sources said the project would also spur industrial activity, promote all-round development in the region and create new employment opportunities for locals as well as others.
The USCTPP is being established over 479 hectares, keeping in view the strategic geographical location of the site. The location is considered highly advantageous from a logistical standpoint with the river Ganga to the north, a national highway to the south and a nearby railway station facilitating coal transportation and access to other resources, sources informed.
PM Narendra Modi had virtually laid the foundation stone for the USCTPP in Sept 2025. During an environmental public hearing (EPH) held in Jan this, local support for the project was witnessed. At the public hearing, representatives from various panchayats, local villagers and residents unanimously endorsed the project, paving the way for commencement of construction work.
