PATNA: Nearly 400 teachers of Patna University (PU) will elect their representatives to the university senate through secret ballot in keenly-contested elections to be held on Saturday.
The university has made necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of elections to be held at Wheeler Senate House. PU registrar Vibhas Kumar Yadav will be the chief returning officer and be assisted by several senior teachers in polling and counting work.
Polling will be held from 10am to 3pm and counting of votes will start at 4pm. Classes of all colleges and postgraduate departments have been suspended for the day to facilitate the teachers to cast their votes.
Altogether 15 members are to be elected to the senate but as many as five candidates have already been elected uncontested. They include Patna Women’s College teacher Punam Kumari, Magadh Mahila College teacher Pushpanjali Khare, Vanijya Mahavidyalaya teacher Suppan Prasad, PU political science department teacher Vinay Soren and personnel management and industrial relations (PMIR) department teacher Govind Kumar.
There is a triangular contest for one seat in PG science faculty. The contestants are S K Srivastava of zoology department and Birendra Kumar and Chaudhary Sarfuddin of botany department. In the faculty of social science, three teachers including Balram Tiwary of Hindi department, B K Jamuar of Ancient Indian history department and Sarad Prawal of PMIR department, are contesting for two seats under general category. Under OBC category too, there are three contestants namely Israel Raza of Urdu department, Seema Prasad of political science department and S Alam of Ancient Indian history department for one seat. There is a straight contest for one seat in the faculty of commerce. The contestants are N K Jha and Asim Lal Chakravorty.
Under college constituencies, in science unit, the contestants include Rabindra Kumar,
Dilip Kumar Verma and Kalyani Singh. Under OBC category in social science unit, Iftekhar Hussain of Patna College, Suheli of Magadh Mahila College and Rupam Kumari of Patna Women’s College are contesting for two seats. Under SC category, Kamlesh Kumari of Magadh Mahila College, Nand Lal Paswan and Abhay Prakash of B N College are in fray for one seat.
Meanwhile, the non-teaching staff of PU cast their votes on Friday to elect their representative to the senate. As many as seven employees contested the elections for one seat.
Silver jubilee meet: The 1987 batch of Bihar College of Engineering (now NIT Patna) will celebrate its silver jubilee year by organizing a family reunion for the batchmates on Saturday. Event organizing committee president Sanjeev Sinha said that more than 50 batchmates with their families are likely to attend the reunion. Many of the 1987 batch alumni have achieved commendable positions in engineering services, civil services, corporate world, software industries, teaching and research. They will also be attending the BCE-NIT Patna annual alumni meet on Sunday.
