While playing at around 4pm at her maternal grandparent’s house on Tuesday, the baby had fallen into the borewell and got stuck around 43 feet deep. Sana, the daughter of Nachiketa Prasad, was well when she was rescued by the state disaster response force (SDRF) and NDRF teams by digging a L-shape hole nearby.

SDRF had started the rescue operations around 7pm on Tuesday. “The rescue team was unable to manually take the child out as the hole was very narrow. As she was very young, we could not ask her to tie or grab a rope to pull her out,” a senior SDRF official said.

No nourishment could be provided as the child was too young to feed herself. But oxygen was supplied continuously inside the hole with the help of an oxygen cylinder and pipe. A CCTV camera was also lowered into the hole to monitor her movement.

“Rainy season and wet mud made the operations complicated. Our first priority was to extract the child safely,” the official added.

Sana’s mother kept talking to her through the hole to ensure that the child was alive and stable.

Munger sadar hospital medical superintendent Dr Rakesh Kumar Sinha, who was there, said the child survived due to will power. “We were unable to provide any nourishment as the young child might have asphyxiated while feeding herself,” Dr Sinha said.

A similar incidence was reported on July 30 from Naugachia in

Bhagalpur

where a four-year-old boy had fallen inside a borewell. He was rescued manually in two hours as the borewell was quite wide,” the SDRF official said.
