Patna: The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested two criminals accused of impersonating police officers and robbing Rs 22.50 lakh from a gold trader at Patna Junction. The accused, identified as Raja Kumar (20) from Karbighhiya and Deepak Kumar (20) from Khusrupur, were apprehended on Wednesday with Rs 19 lakh in cash recovered from their possession. The incident occurred around midnight on Dec 29, 2025. According to the complaint filed by trader Dheeraj Kumar at the GRP police station, his brother-in-law, Deepak Kumar (25) from Vaishali, was delivering silver jewellery to Santosh Deokar’s shop in Bakarganj, Patna. Upon returning, he carried a bag containing Rs 22.50 lakh in cash.Railway SP Inamul Haq Mengnoo said, “At Patna Junction, a man in police uniform approached the victim, claiming it was evening and offering to check the bag for security on Platform 1. Taking advantage of the cold weather, the suspects wore khaki jackets resembling police uniforms to pose as officers. They lured the victim to a room at the station, claiming to summon senior officials, and snatched Rs 22 lakh from him in the darkness before fleeing. One of the accused had saved a contact as ‘GRP’ on his phone to further deceive the victim.”Following the complaint, a case was registered on Dec 30. GRP officers, led by Rajesh Kumar, swiftly analysed CCTV footage with technical assistance, identifying Deepak Kumar first.
Information from him led to the arrest of the second accused. Raids on their homes resulted in the recovery of Rs 19 lakh. The SP disclosed that the accused had been selling water at Patna Junction for the past three months and had rented a room in Karbighhiya.“During interrogation, the suspects revealed they mistook Kumar’s bag for containing liquor bottles, intending to extort money from a presumed smuggler. They were surprised to find such a large sum of cash and claimed this was their first offence. No prior criminal record has been found so far. Investigations are ongoing to recover the remaining Rs 3.50 lakh. Given the substantial amount involved, the income tax department has been informed and will conduct a parallel probe, following which the money will be returned to the owner,” Mengnoo said.
