Noida's Botanical Garden set for makeover, visitor access halted temporarily

The Botanical Garden of Indian Republic in Sector 38A is undergoing a large-scale upgrade. Officials have indicated that the revamp will continue for about two more years, with signboards currently restricting visitor entry at the green gates during the ongoing work.

Entry to the Botanical Garden of Indian Republic has been closed since January last year, as confirmed by scientist-in-charge Sandeep Chauhan. The closure will remain in place until the upgradation work is fully completed, ensuring safety during development activities.

The redevelopment plan for the Botanical Garden of Indian Republic includes creating distinct zones representing tropical, subtropical and tropical moist forest types. These sections are being designed to showcase diverse ecological habitats within the garden.

Under the ₹490-crore plan, the Botanical Garden of Indian Republic will feature new additions such as a trellis garden, discovery garden, bonsai section, curious plant section, garden of senses, aquatic garden, and dedicated spaces for cacti, succulents, palms and edible plants.

Along with thematic gardens, the Botanical Garden of Indian Republic will also develop an administrative building and an interpretation centre. These facilities aim to support better management and enhance the visitor learning experience once the garden reopens.

The Botanical Garden of Indian Republic maintains a herbarium and currently houses over 1,500 specimens of flowering plants (angiosperms), along with a variety of trees, herbs and shrubs sourced from different regions across India.

Established in 2002 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Botanical Garden of Indian Republic spans 164.85 acres and has functioned as a nodal centre for conservation research and environmental education over the years.
