Noida protest: 49 more contractors lose licence over labour law violations
Noida: The labour department has cancelled the licences of 14 more contractors for alleged non-compliance with labour laws, taking the total number of revocations in the district to 49 since the violent unrest on April 13.
Officials said the action followed repeated notices issued to contractors found violating regulations during inspections, with authorities also recommending blacklisting of the defaulting firms.
The latest cancellations come after the suspension of licences of 10 contractors on April 18 and 25 others on April 21 under the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970.
Additional labour commissioner Rakesh Dwivedi said the department has been carrying out regular inspections and enforcement drives across industrial establishments to maintain industrial peace and safeguard workers’ interests. During these inspections, several contractors were found violating labour regulations, prompting notices seeking explanations.
“The 14 contractors whose licences were cancelled did not submit any response within the stipulated period. With this, the total number of contractor licences cancelled has reached 49. We have also written to the labour commissioner recommending that these contractors be blacklisted,” Dwivedi said.
He added that show-cause notices were issued on Monday to six more contractors for alleged violations, indicating that further action may follow.
Officials said principal employers and factory managers linked to contractors facing cancellation have been asked to ensure that wages and other dues of contract workers are paid directly into their bank accounts, with adjustments to be made against pending contractor bills.
The department reiterated that payment of wages remains the statutory responsibility of the principal employer, especially when contractors fail to meet obligations.
