2 lure youths with Navy job offer & cheat many in UP; held
NOIDA: The Noida police and STF Agra jointly arrested two men for allegedly cheating people on the pretext of providing them jobs in the Indian Navy.
They have been identified as Atul Mathur (26) and Sunny Kumar (30), both natives of Kasganj.
Police said that Mathur posed as a lieutenant commander in the Indian Navy and took Rs 8-10 lakh from each victim offering them the position of a divisional clerk.
"We received information that Mathur was cheating youths living in villages of Noida, Greater Noida, Agra, Mathura and other nearby districts by posing as a navy officer. Acting on the tip-off, we arrested him from his residence in Amrapali Zodiac in Sector 120 on Tuesday,” said Pramodh Kumar Prajapati, the SHO of Sector 113 police station.
During questioning, Mathur revealed the name of five other gang members and subsequently, police managed to nab Kumar on Wednesday. However, four others are still on the run.
"Several sailor caps of the Indian Navy, badges, uniform and other items were recovered from Mathur’s residence. He told the cops about five other gang members out of which we caught one on Wednesday from the same society as Mathur,” said Shakti Awasthi, the additional deputy commissioner of police of Noida (ADCP).
Police said the other gang members used to lure innocent youths and make them meet Mathur.
The accused have been booked for impersonating a public servant, cheating and forgery.
"The gang has been active since 2021 and has cheated at least nine people to the tune of over Rs 50 lakh. The two arrested persons were produced in a district court on Wednesday that sent them to judicial custody,” added Awasthi.
Meanwhile, police have formed teams to identify and arrest the four remaining gang members.
