NAVI MUMBAI: A minor altercation over a card game between two youths turned into a gory murder on Thursday night, at a pandal that was erected on an open space in front of a Sanpada building. The household Ganpati celebration ended with one youth fatally assaulting the other.
Anny Shetty (20), a resident of Kombadbhuja near Uran was allegedly murdered inside a pandal erected by a local resident, Mangesh Thakur, for the convenience of devotees visiting his house for Ganpati darshan in sector-5, Sanpada.
The murder was discovered on Friday, at around 8 am, soon after the morning aarti was over.
ACP Dilip Jagtap said that Shetty used to spend a lot of time in Sanpada as he had many friends there. On Thursday night, Shetty was part of a group of youths who were playing cards in the Ganpati pandal. Suddenly, an altercation broke out between Shetty and Mahadev Kisan Jadhav (24), a local resident, over Rs 100 which the victim refused to pay to the accused after losing the card game. There ensued a verbal quarrel between them in the presence of other locals present at the pandal.
After the others pacified the duo, Shetty along with seven or eight youths slept on an iron bench inside the pandal. In the morning, when the priest came to perform aarti, everybody woke up, except the accused who had fled and Shetty. As there was nobody at the pandal except them, Jadhav allegedly took revenge and banged Shetty's head against the iron bench on which he was sleeping.
As a result, Shetty sustained grievous head injury and started bleeding profusely. Jadhav fled from the scene leaving Shetty in a pool of blood. After 30 to 45 minutes, when the devotees returned to the pandal, they found Shetty lying unconscious and bleeding. He was rushed to NMMC hospital but the doctors declared him brought dead."
ACP Jagtap added, "Shetty did not have any permanent job and did odd jobs given to him by friends and relatives. While the accused Jadhav worked on contract basis in hotels as a housekeeping staff. The Turbhe police have registered a murder case against the accused, Mahadev Jadhav, who has been arrested and booked under Section 302 of the IPC."
