Vashi school helps city manage its e-waste
Navi Mumbai: Students of Anjuman-I-Islam A A Khatkhatay English secondary
The students first carried out an awareness drive about the hazards of ‘e-waste’ and educated the general public about its safe disposal, recycling and reuse. They then organised an ‘e-waste’ collection drive at Vashi, Koparkhairane, Turbhe and other neighbouring areas in the last week of February. “ Our drive got an overwhelming response from the residents and within a fortnight we collected as much as 280kg of e-waste, including all sorts of e-goods even television sets,” said Shaikh Falak, a student. The same was handed over to a recycling unit for proper disposal and recycling.
The total amount collected as sale proceeds has been allocated for the education of underprivileged children of the society, said Zulekha Siddiqui, the school’s principal. “The school is looking forward to make Navi Mumbai ‘e-waste free’ and has invited patrons from neighbouring housing societies to support this cause by contributing their ‘e-wastes’, thus not only protecting the environment but also helping in the education of economically deprived children,” she said.
The school has made necessary arrangements to collect ‘e-wastes’ in the school campus and ensure its proper disposal. Students appeal to the residents to deposit their e-waste in the school collection box, thus contributing to environment and educating less privileged kids.
