NAVI MUMBAI: The popular police sniffer dog from Navi Mumbai’s Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, Siddhi, will soon retire and a new trained sniffer dog will be recruited in her place.
At the Republic Day parade in the city, the police personnel announced that it would be Siddhi’s last, as she smartly saluted from atop a police vehicle.
“Siddhi is a nine years and two months old female Labrador.
Since it is a normal to retire sniffer dogs before they turn 10, we are going to look for a new trained explosives sniffer dogs for the Navi Mumbai police force,” said PSI J Gaikwad of the police dog unit.
According to Gaikwad, sniffer dogs are given to animal shelters or NGOs after retirement or one of the police personnel adopt these dogs. “We ensure that they remain in good care after their service is completed,” he added.
Siddhi was inducted into the Navi Mumbai police along with her twin sister, Sakshi, who was trained for normal crime detection. Sakshi died later due to medical complications.
“Siddhi is among the best sniffer dogs we’ve had so far. She has worked methodically on each case of bomb alarm,” said assistant inspector Samadhan Chavan of BDDS, Navi Mumbai.
