Sena UBT leaders organise ‘unique’ protest over statue collapse

Navi Mumbai: Shiv Sena-UBT leaders organised a unique protest in Pen township, Raigad on the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue at Rajkot Fort in Malvan, Sindhudurg. Sena functionary and a retired government teacher Ravindranath Patil (62) rolled himself on a portion of 250 metre long road stretch seeking forgiveness over the unfortunate incident. Around 50 others joined him during the two hour long protest on Thursday between the Ambedkar statue and Shivaji Maharaj statue in the municipal council area. He later did 21 sit-ups before the statue of the great Maratha king. Patil currently owns and operates two schools in the locality. These schools were started by his father. He was found deeply hurt after the statue collapse incident on August 26. There are state wide protests made by various political parties and organizations. The leader has named his protest as “Aatmaklesh”. Patil said, “I did the protest as we as voters are responsible for the incident. Voters are influenced by money (Rs 500) or schemes to elect those to power to make money. They use more money to get reelected. The statue collapse incident is an eye opener for all. Hence this protest will create awareness among people.”He added, “Corruption has become the way to get power from money and money from power. Earlier corruption was on gutters and roads but now it has reached the statue of the Maharaj. Hence being a teacher I or we are all responsible and have failed somewhere.”

Approaching through a friend, he was arrested after undergoing a medical check-up. The police are actively searching for the statue sculptor, Jaydip Apte, who remains on the run.
