Parking proposal as per HC order fails to get civic approval

Navi Mumbai: The civic proposal to modify

parking

provisions and provide at least one parking slot each for all tenants in the existing Development Control Regulation norms was not approved again by the general body on Friday. The same proposal was earlier tabled before the house in December 2016 as well.

The town planning department had proposed to make it mandatory upon builders to provide at least one parking space for each tenement that has a built up area upto 45 sq m or carpet area upto 35 sq m.

“ The Bombay high court has already directed the civic body on September 7 in 2011 to implement these changes to address the parking issue in the city. Civic failure to comply with the directive has led to filing of contempt of court case in 2016. In order to implement the modifications, the approval of the house is necessary. Hence the proposal was placed on Friday,” said a senior official from town planning.

General body members said that a scientific survey is required to ascertain the applicability of the order.

“It is not not possible to provide one parking space for one tenement as against the existing provision of one parking space for every four tenements owing to the acute parking sapce shortage in Cidco built buildings. NMMC law department’s repeated failure to appraise High Court about the ground reality about city's housing scenario has led to the erroneous order. Giving approval would mean end of development plans of Cidco built buildings,” said corporator Kishor Patkar.

The town planning plans to get IIT to do the survey and submit its recommendations to the court and the house.
