NAVI MUMBAI: The city police department is in the process of setting up Crime and Criminal Tracking Networking System (CCTNS) at all the police stations under its jurisdiction. The system has already been set up at 10 police stations in both the zones.
The authorities said that the system will provide the officers with the necessary information to facilitate investigation of crime and detection of criminals.

The system is aimed at enhancing police functioning. It will also reduce the burden of manual record keeping, they added.
DCP (crime) Suresh Mengade said that the system will be started in the remaining 10 police stations after a couple of days, “thus, upgrading the crime database record of the Navi Mumbai police commissionerate”.
He added that the system will be useful for prompt access to criminals’ record. “Transparency will be maintained, as the concerned police stations will not be able to delay carrying out the investigation,” he said.
Mengade also said that the panchanama details of any crime will have to be recorded online within the specific time period.
However, the data can be tracked only by the police officers. They can access it via a password protected web link.

“The CCTNS is a police database system and will help in sharing authentic information of any crimes with our counterparts in neighbouring police commissionerates,” said Mengade.
He added that the system will help in increasing the detection rate of criminal cases as well.
The system will also have a specific portal for citizens to access information about FIR details.
Hence, even a person residing in other states will be able to access information of a particular FIR registered at a specific police station in Navi Mumbai.
