NAVI MUMBAI: Airoli girls stole the show at Sunday’s Thane marathon. National-level kho kho player, Diksha Sonsurkar, won the under-15 girl’s championship while the third and fourth prizes were also won by Airoli girls, Prajakta Shinde and Neha Phuphane.
“It was great to win the 5-km race amidst tough competition from champion runners,” Diksha said.
Dimple Choudhary and Akanksha Barje, both from Airoli, came 7th and 9th in the under-15 girl’s group. The city girls proved their prowess by dominating the under-15 group.
Other girls from Airoli, Bhavika Shinde, Shravani Gurav and Shivani Pal, performed their best to bag places in the top-ten league in the under-12 girl’s group, winning the 3rd, 4th and 10th slots respectively.
Seasoned marathoners from Uran, Supriya Patil and Heena Mali, also won prizes in the women’s open group (15km) in Sunday’s event, which drew over 22,000 participants. Patil and Mali finished 4th and 6th at the state-level race which was attended by international marathoners.
“I regret that I failed to recreate the winning streak here as I had done in the Kranti Daud in Thane on August 14,” said Mali.
