Nashik: The Ambad police of Nashik city on Sunday arrested two people in connection with a series of cellphone thefts, recovering 16 such gadgets of worth Rs6 lakh.
The arrested have been identified as Sunil Somashe (27), who is a resident of Indiranagar and Kiran Bacchav (32), who is a resident of Malegaon.
The suspects, who worked as delivery boys for an e-commerce company, allegedly tampered with parcels intended for delivery. They would remove the cellphones and replace them with other materials, such as packets of spices, before returning the tampered boxes to the godown as undelivered parcels.
The case came to light earlier this month when the delivery agency registered an FIR at the Ambad police station. The company manager reported that several cellphones, which were supposed to be returned to the agency after failed deliveries, were missing from their packages.
Senior PI Jagvendrasingh Rajput of the Ambad police station said the suspects intentionally marked deliveries as cancelled to keep the parcels. During the investigation, they traced the duo and arrested them on Sunday. The suspects confessed to selling the stolen phones to people in their native villages in Dhule. The recovery and arrest were carried out under the guidance of CP Sandeep Karnik, DCP (Zone 2) Kishor Kale and ACP Sachin Bari.
