Nashik: The Nashik zilla parishad has initiated steps to rehabilitate and provide employment opportunities to 14,185 single women in rural parts of the district, based on a comprehensive survey that mapped their age groups and priorities.
According to a senior zilla parishad (ZP) official, the survey was conducted during the tenure of former chief executive officer Ashima Mittal, and the current CEO, Omkar Pawar, has begun implementing measures aimed at skill development and self‑employment to economically empower these women.
"The survey revealed a significant population of widows, divorcees, deserted women and elderly unmarried women, who often remain invisible in traditional policy frameworks," the officer said, adding that the ZP is also addressing systemic challenges, including health security and the emotional well‑being of elderly single women.
Taluka‑wise data shows that the highest number of single women are in Sinnar, followed by Igatpuri, Niphad and Yeola.
Age‑group data from the survey indicates that 1,274 women are in the 18–30 age group, 8,551 are between 31 and 40, 26,276 fall in the 41–55 category, and 56,694 are aged above 55.
"The primary focus is to ensure sustainable livelihoods for around 36,000 women below the age of 55, as financial independence will help them gain dignity and social acceptance," the officer said.
As part of livelihood support, the ZP is planning to include eligible women in self‑help groups, enabling them to participate in the economic system and earn income. Beyond employment, the district administration is also focusing on health security and emotional support, particularly for elderly women.
In addition, the ZP is considering enrolling the women's children — around 22,000 in number — under the Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Bal Sangopan Scheme, which provides a monthly scholarship of 2,250 per child to prevent school dropouts and support continued education.
