NASHIK: The local court on Wednesday remanded the five accused booked for allegedly running an autorickshaw over four police officials, including an assistant inspector, in magisterial custody two days ago.
Senior inspector (Upnagar police station) Ashok Bhagat said the policemen were deployed at Tapovan junction on September 5 as part of the routine nakabandi.
"The incident took place around 6.30pm when four officials including API Raju Thorat and three constables were stationed at the point and the auto rickshaw (registration number plate MH 15 EH 1744) was signalled to stop. Instead of adhereing to the signal, the vehicle sped away," he said.
Bhagat added that the accused driver Shivaji Naik (21) and passengersNitin Ashok Wadkar (23), Rohit Naik (20), Rohit Haldankar (20) and Dnyaneshwar Waghmare (21)are all residents of Hirawadi in Panchavati. Later, they returned to the spot and tried to run over the four officials who were standing on the road and ran away.
The accused were arrested late night and slapped with an offence of attempt to murder, deterring public servant from discharging his duty among other sections. "All the accused were produced before the court on Tuesday which had remanded them a one-day police custody," he added.
Bhagat added that during investigations we found that all the accused were under the influence of alcohol when the incident took plan and conspired to attack the cops. "The court remanded them to a 14-day judicial custody on Wednesday," he added.
Another cop assaulted
In another incident reported with Bhadrakali police station on the night of September 4, constable Bhausaheb Vishram Chattar (43) was manhandled by three persons while he was on duty. According to the police, the accused Anand Ashok Tasambad (28), a resident of Kathe galli area was riding a bike and had two pillion riders. "When Chattar stopped him at Kathe galli signal for riding triple seat, the trio entered into an argument. The accused then manhandled the cop and verbally abused him. The cop soon registered an offence against Tasambad for deterring public servant from his performing duty. He was later released on bail.
