Union MoS for education visits Manipur landslide site

Nagpur: Union minister of state for education Subhas Sarkar, who is currently in Imphal, paid a visit to Tupul landslide spot in Noney district in Manipur on Sunday morning.

Sarkar was accompanied by MP (RS) Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba and MP (LS) Raju Bista.

The devastating landslide hit the 107 Territorial Army (TA) camp located at Tupul railway construction camp at Makhuam area of Noney district in the wee hours of June 30.

With the recovery of one more body on Sunday (till 2pm), the death toll from the landslide has risen to 35.

As per an official source, as many as 81 people, mostly TA personnel, were affected by the landslide that completely buried the TA and other camps located in the area.

The rescue operation launched by a Joint Task Force comprising Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF, CRPF, Army medical doctors, Manipur police, fire service personnel, volunteers of MMTA and locals has so far rescued 18 people alive.

Talking to the media at the spot, the Union minister said operation is being monitored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union railway minister personally. “I pray to god that they (personnel) recover very early and go to their homes very quickly,” Sarkar said.
