Nagpur Violence: Highlights

Curfew has been imposed in several areas of Nagpur after violent clashes erupted over demands for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb. The unrest began in Chitnis Park, where stone pelting occurred amid rumors of a holy book being burnt, followed by another clash in Hansapuri, where vehicles were torched, police vans vandalized, and multiple injuries were reported.

At least 12 police personnel, including three DCPs, were injured, and 15 people have been arrested so far. Authorities have restricted movement in affected areas, with local DCPs managing vehicular access.

AIMIM national spokesperson Waris Pathan condemned the violence, accusing certain BJP leaders of spreading hatred to divert attention from key issues and demanding a government probe. Meanwhile, BJP MP Anil Bonde alleged that organized crime elements were incited to instigate the violence and blamed the Opposition MVA for fueling tensions.

Right-wing groups had earlier threatened to demolish Aurangzeb’s tomb, while a group in Uttar Pradesh announced a Rs 21 lakh reward for its destruction, leading to heightened security in Khultabad. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have urged for calm, while Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal imposed restrictions until further notice to maintain peace.
