NAGPUR: City police chief KK Pathak sounded keen to put a brake on gang activities in south Nagpur particularly operating from and around Ajni. The city, of late, has been witnessing a spurt in murder cases with two such incidents getting registered at Ajni police station.
Pathak said that police have rounded up notorious gang leader Virendra Lonare alias Girjya and slapped him with the stringent Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act.
Girjya is also the husband of Babulkheda corporator.
"We are also planning to slap Maharashtra Control Of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) against Rohit Ramteke and his gang. Apart from their involvement in the murder of Santosh Sare, we have also booked them in a gang rape case following a complaint of a teenager. So there are strong grounds
for MCOCA as they have past cases too," said Pathak. He added that police are researching the criminal history of the accused to develop strong cases against each one of them. Pathak also said that instructions have been issued to act tough against those engaged in gang activities.
"We are taking preventive actions in maximum cases. At present, we are identifying the members of each gang to round them up. We plan to charge them with such sections that they stay behind bars for considerable period," said the top cop.
