NADT training BRICS officers in BEPS & Int’l Tax

Nagpur: National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT), the govt's premier institution that trains officers of Indian Revenue (IRS) cadre joining the Income Tax Department, will be training taxmen from BRICS countries in a week-long capsule that began on Monday. One of the stress areas includes Base Erosion and Profit Sharing (BEPS) under which multinational companies adopt tax-dodging strategies by shifting to tax havens or low-tax locations. BEPS is being dealt with by Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a group of 38 countries headquartered in Paris dealing with tax conventions. NADT had earlier taken up training under the OECD rules too. The current training is an initiative under India's BRICS chairmanship for the year 2026. This includes drafting of working papers on different issues related to international taxation on basis of discussions held between the trainees.Trainees include 3 officers from Brazil, 4 from Russia, 3 from China and 2 each from South Africa, UAE and Ethiopia. Apart from it, 6 Indian officers will also take part in the training.Inaugural session was addressed by Central Board of Direct Taxes' (CBDT) member (legislation), Prasenjit Singh. He spoke on importance of international collaboration in addressing tax challenges and role of young professionals in shaping a transparent, fair and resilient global tax system. Training will also cover OECD and UN model convention, global tax reforms like Pillar One and Pillar Two, apart from dispute resolution mechanisms like advance pricing agreements and mutual agreement procedures. A series of tax discussion would be held to come up with papers on enhancing cooperation between countries, technical development and tax practices.
