MSEDCL issues safety advisory ahead of Holi, urges citizens to follow precautions
Nagpur: With Holi and Rangpanchami just days away, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) issued a safety advisory urging citizens to strictly follow electrical safety norms to prevent accidents and power disruptions during the festivities. As preparations gather pace across Maharashtra, MSEDCL's Nagpur Circle cautioned that negligence while celebrating the festival of colours could lead to serious mishaps, including fire hazards, electric shocks, and large-scale power outages. Officials appealed to citizens to ensure that Holi bonfires are not lit beneath overhead high-tension power lines, as intense heat can damage or snap the wires, posing a grave risk to life and property.
The power utility also expressed concern over the impact of excessive heat on underground power cables installed in several parts of the city. Damage to such infrastructure can disrupt electricity supply to entire localities. Citizens were therefore advised to choose open spaces away from electrical installations while lighting bonfires.Ahead of Rangpanchami, MSEDCL warned against splashing water or throwing water balloons near transformers and electric poles. With people often drenched in water and colour, the risk of electric shock increases when wet hands come into contact with switches or when individuals lean against electric poles. The utility urged residents to prevent water from accumulating near distribution panels and to protect electricity meters, plugs, and appliances from exposure. The advisory also highlighted the risk posed by reckless driving and hooliganism during celebrations, which in the past led to vehicles crashing into feeder pillars and electric poles, damaging infrastructure and disrupting supply. Organisers of public events were asked to ensure that qualified technicians inspect all electrical equipment at venues in advance.MSEDCL officials said technical staff will remain on special patrol during the festive period to respond swiftly to emergencies. In case of any untoward incident or power failure, citizens were advised not to attempt repairs themselves but to contact the utility's 24-hour toll-free helplines.Chief Engineer Dilip Dodke appealed to citizens to cooperate with the power utility and adhere to safety norms to ensure that the festival remains joyous, safe, and free from electrical hazards.
