Migrant labourer without Aadhaar card behind attack on Kalamna cop

Nagpur: Police investigation has revealed that the main accused behind stabbing a police sub-inspector in Kalamna area, believed to be a migrant worker from Madhya Pradesh, had no Aadhaar card or any verifiable identity documents, raising safety concerns rise regarding such labourers. CP Ravinder Singal has now directed police to check workplaces and sites to ensure migrants are hired only after collecting Aadhaar cards. Zonal deputy commissioner of police Niketan Kadam has issued strict instructions to all traders, businessmen and employers of migrant labourers in this regard.Recently, PSI Sachin Waklekar was stabbed near Dipti Signal by two assailants who also fled with his motorcycle. Mahendra Uike has been identified as the main accused.Kalamna police faced difficulty in identifying the attackers. With no records available from employers, investigators had to depend largely on CCTV footage and manual intelligence gathering.Migrant labourers from Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh are employed in sawmills, rice mills, godowns and construction sites in Nagpur. "If migrants are found to be involved in a major crime, tracking the accused would be a real challenge in absence of documents," said a cop.Sources pointed out that the increase in number of burglaries and thefts in the city is being linked to these undocumented migrant workers, who can easily evade detection and disappear without a trace.While reverse migration during the Covid-19 pandemic had caused major disruptions to local industries, old issues have resurfaced with their return in large numbers, said police.
