‘Meghe’s life was of generosity, humility, service beyond politics’
I remember Dattabhau Meghe as more than a colleague in public life — he was like an elder brother to me, a guiding presence whose warmth and generosity, touched countless lives. His passing has left a void that cannot be filled. Despite being deeply rooted in politics, he remained an ajatshatru (one who has no enemy). Anyone who connected with him never drifted away. His personality was marked by simplicity, compassion and an innate ability to bring people together.Dattabhau's journey began from a very humble background. He studied at CP and Berar College while supporting himself through small means like selling ice-fruit and running a used bookshop. From those modest beginnings, he entered public life as a Congress worker and steadily rose to become a legislator and a leader with a distinct identity. What truly set him apart was his commitment to society. Whatever he earned, he believed a portion must reach the needy. He worked tirelessly to support poor families and ensure that children from underprivileged backgrounds could pursue education. Many students studied either free of cost or at minimal fees in the institutions he built.A poor person who approached him never returned disappointed. If I were to compare his generosity, it would be with Mahabharata's Karna. Even those who criticised him often received help from him quietly. For him, a person mattered more than political affiliation. His contribution to education was remarkable. From starting a pharmacy college at Ravi Nagar, from CP and Berar High School to establishing engineering and medical colleges, he created a vast network of institutions that generated employment and opened doors of opportunity for thousands. Our association went beyond politics. In recent years, we worked together for the welfare of senior citizens, and his support and guidance was invaluable. He always believed that the elderly should live with dignity and satisfaction, and he worked towards that till his last days.Dattabhau remained the same person despite holding positions as MLA, minister and MP. His relationships never changed, his humility never faded. That is why even his political opponents eventually became his admirers. With his demise, I feel I have lost an elder brother. Our bond was not just political but deeply personal, extending to our families. I pray to God to give strength to his family to bear this loss. People like Dattabhau live on forever in the hearts of those they touched. The author is Nagpur MP and Union minister for road transport and highways
