Man sentenced to life for murder

NAGPUR: A sessions court has sentenced a man to life sentence and five others to jail terms of different durations for a murder that took place in Khamla about a couple of years back. Ninth district and additional sessions judge Anil Subramaniam convicted prime accused Swapnil Somkuwar of Milind Nagar in Khamla for killing Monu Gurbani on February 24, 2008, over a petty dispute.Dipak Kolhe appeared for the prosecution assisted by Shyam Devani, Kailash Dodani and Kamlesh Gurbani.
According to prosecution, a dispute took place when the complainant Atish Gurbani and Monu were returning to home while passing from Khamla Road on their motorcycle. They collided with the vehicle of the accused and an altercation ensued. Around 6.30 pm, the prime accused, along with four accomplices, went to Monu's home and called him outside. They started beating Monu mercilessly. Suddenly, Somkuwar assaulted Monu on the chest with a sharp weapon. Hearing Monu's cries, his brother Atish also came out of the home and was shocked to see Monu lying in a pool of blood. The accused, however, managed to escape from the spot. Monu was rushed to hospital but was declared brought dead.
On Atish's complaint, Pratap Nagar Police station prepared a charge-sheet under sections 143,147,148, 149, 302, 504 read with section 34 of IPC and arrested all six accused. The case came up in the trial court where 13 witnesses were examined. The judge found Somkumwar and his five accomplices " Ramesh Lokhande, Banti Mankar, Ashish Wankhede, Swapnil Gajbhiye and Vijay Patil " guilty of murdering Monu.
While Somkuwar got life imprisonment, his accomplices were sentenced to imprisonment ranging from six to 18 months and also have been imposed with different penalties.
