MahaRail Misses Another Deadline For Jagnade Square Flyover, Delays Continue To Frustrate Citizens

Nagpur: Plagued by repeated delays, the Jagnade Square flyover — meant to decongest a key traffic artery — has put execution and accountability in big-ticket infrastructure projects under scrutiny. The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (MRIDC), popularly known as MahaRail, which is executing the project, has already missed two deadlines. Work on the project began in Feb 2024 with an initial completion target of Dec 2025, which was later extended to March 2026. Despite the revised deadline, significant portions of the project remain incomplete, fuelling public frustration over prolonged traffic disruptions. A visit by TOI to the site revealed that large sections of both flyovers have been constructed up to Jagnade Square from all four directions. However, the main hurdle remains the central merger point, where work on the elevated interchange structure is still unfinished, leaving major stretches disconnected. MRIDC has erected several pillars at the junction where the two flyovers are designed to intersect. As a result, commuters travelling through the heavily congested East Nagpur corridor continue to face bottlenecks, diversions, and mounting traffic pressure. Residents and traders say the prolonged work has worsened congestion and affected businesses in surrounding areas. The project, one of several flyover works being executed by MRIDC in East Nagpur, involves the construction of two three-lane flyovers intersecting above the busy junction. One corridor is being developed from Reshimbag Chowk to KDK College Square, while the other will connect Telephone Exchange Chowk to Bhande Plot Chowk. The project is estimated to cost around Rs251 crore. The flyover project is technically significant, with two elevated corridors set to intersect above Jagnade Square—effectively creating a junction over the existing road intersection. The total project length is approximately 2,310 metres. Citizens have also pointed to repeated delays in several MRIDC infrastructure projects across Nagpur, alleging that works routinely overshoot announced timelines without clarity on revised completion schedules. The repeated extensions have raised questions over project monitoring and coordination, particularly given the severe traffic impact in densely populated areas.
