IGMCH to get MRI, new CAT scan machines

NAGPUR: Poor patients coming to

(IGMCH) have been facing tough times as the outdated CAT scan machine breaks down every now and then. The patients are then referred to

GMCH

. In a major relief for them, the state government has decided to replace the outdated 2-slice machine with the latest 128-slice version.

In another good news, the college will be getting its very first MRI machine (1.5 Tesla). IGMCH medical superintendent Dr

Sandhya Manjrekar

told TOI, “The pre-bid meeting was held on Friday last.”

Tendering process will be completed by the end of November. If the machines are indigenous, then they will be supplied in February 2017. If imported, they are will likely to reach IGMCH by April.

TOI has been reporting about how the 15-year-old CAT scan machine remains dysfunctional for 1-2 months in a year. The machine does not even fulfil the

Medical Council of India

(MCI) norms, says a professor from IGMCH. “At the same time, GMCH has a 60-slice machine at its diagnostic department and a 128-slice machine at its Super Speciality Hospital (SSH),” he said.

In 2011, IGMCH’s diagnostic department received MCI recognition despite college not having an MRI machine. MCI observed that there was no need for separate MRI machines at both the medical colleges which are within a distance of 5km from each other.
