From NMC Corridors To City Streets, Women Firmly Get Into Driving Seat
Nagpur: The city witnessed vibrant celebrations on Sunday as women from different walks of life came together to mark International Women's Day through a series of public, social, and fitness events. Marathons, bike rallies, cultural programmes, and special offers across restaurants and pubs highlighted women's empowerment, health awareness, and community participation.A major highlight was the ‘Pink Marathon' organised by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) from Yashwant Stadium. A large number of women participated enthusiastically, promoting fitness, health awareness, and the importance of an active lifestyle.
Social worker Amruta Fadnavis flagged off the marathon in the presence of mayor Neeta Thakre, deputy mayor Leela Hathibed, standing committee chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhre, other municipal committee chairpersons, and senior civic officials.Addressing the gathering, Fadnavis said a healthy and confident woman forms the backbone of a strong society. Thakre welcomed the overwhelming response, noting that the large turnout of women made the event energetic and inspiring. The event began with a Zumba session. The Pink Marathon featured three categories — a 3km run for girls below 16 years, a 5km run for the general category and a 2km fun run. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three finishers in each category, while several participants received consolation prizes. Newly elected municipal committee chairpersons were felicitated during the programme.The civic body's health department conducted awareness drives on the HPV vaccination campaign aimed at preventing cervical cancer among adolescent girls.A bike rally led by women riders was also taken out across major city roads, drawing attention as participants carried messages promoting women's empowerment and equality.Several organisations and social groups organised cultural programmes, awareness campaigns, and community events. Educational institutions and NGOs conducted discussions and activities highlighting women's rights, health, and achievements.The hospitality sector joined the celebrations, with many restaurants offering special discounts and complimentary services for women customers. Some popular pubs hosted themed events featuring women DJs.
