AKOLA: The Akola District Consumer Disputes' Redressal Forum has directed child specialist Dr Manoj Rambhau Gawande to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to Kirti Verma and her husband Prakash for negligence which resulted in the death of their infant.
Delivering the judgment on December 17, the district forum headed by Premchand Mishrikotkar observed that the infant died of improper treatment.
The complaint, Kirti Verma, delivered a healthy child (boy) on August 9, 2005 under the supervision of Dr Shital, wife of Dr Manoj Gawande of Gawande Maternity and Children's Hospital, Akot. The following day, the infant was suffering from fever. Dr Gawande treated the infant and told the parents not to worry. The infant was discharged on August 12, 2005. Again its (infant) condition deteriorated. Again Dr Gawande was consulted and he gave the same advise. Unfortunately, the infant died on August 12, 2005. Ironically, Dr Gawande issued the death certificate after 2 days on payment of Rs 2,000.
Interestingly, Kirti who was under Dr Sheetal Gawande, was also pregnant, and did not admit the former in her own hospital. Kirti delivered the child in another hospital.
In defence, Dr Gawande rejected the allegation of negligency made by Kirti and her hubby. Later, Kirti pleaded her case before the district forum, which found the doctor guilty of negligence which caused the infant's death.
