Did NMC ignore orange alert issued by weather dept?

Nagpur: Early morning rain on Saturday threw life out of gear for many people living in low-lying areas, along rivers and nullahs as water gushed into their houses and shanties. Despite orange alert (heavy rain) announced by Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the District Disaster Management Cell and Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) control room failed to convey it to citizens and initiate preventive measures.As a result, eighty-year-old Sandhya Dhore drowned at her home at Surendragadh in West Nagpur. Hundreds of people had to be rescued because their localities got submerged. Congress leader Dipak Wankhede told TOI, “Sandhya Dhore had paralysis. She was sleeping in one room while her family members were in another room of the pucca house, located adjacent to a big nullah. She drowned as the nullah water swelled and entered their house.” Wankhede further said that all three big nullahs in West Nagpur over flow after heavy rains, but no alert was issued for people living in low-lying areas on Friday. People could have been shifted to schools or any other safe place if the alert was issued, he said.Leader of opposition Vijay Wadettiwar alleged negligence on part of the administration. “Poor people and shopkeepers faced losses collectively worth over ₹1,000 crore,” hesaid.Wadettiwar added that NMC failed to desilt Nag, Pili rivers & nullahs before monsoon.Former corporator Manoj Sangole said, “No intimation was given to people living along Pili river on Friday. The administration should wake up now and rehabilitate people residing along the river on a permanent basis.”No NMC official was not present at the control room at night despite a May 25 circular that makes it mandatory for one executive engineer and a deputy engineer to remain present every time an alert is issued. Only staffers of NMC’s fire and emergency services department were present. The top officials reached the control room early in the morning.

Flood alert issued for people living on banks of Thenpennai river

Officials in Krishnagiri have issued a flood warning to residents living along the banks of the Thenpennai river after the water level in the K R P Dam exceeded its maximum storage capacity. The water level reached 50.65 feet, just over the dam's full capacity of 52 feet. People in low-lying areas have been advised to relocate to safer locations. This is the second time this month that the dam has reached its maximum capacity. Neighboring districts have also been alerted to the potential flooding.

Around 160 people in Surat, India were evacuated as the Tapi River flooded low-lying areas. Floodgates were closed, causing waterlogging in some areas. Heavy rainfall upstream led to over five lakh cusecs of inflow into the Ukai dam and three lakh cusecs discharge. In other news, the water level in Ukai Dam is expected to rise due to water release from the Hatnur dam in Maharashtra, and political parties in Tamil Nadu have criticized Karnataka's refusal to release 5,000 cusecs of Cauvery water.

'Unprecedented downpour': Four dead as record rain lashes Nagpur; orange alert sounded

Four people, including two women, died and 14 cattle drowned in Nagpur, India, after heavy rainfall caused flooding. The torrential rain, which started in the early hours of Saturday morning, led to water entering many houses and damaging thousands of vehicles. Schools and colleges were closed, and train services were affected. The city bus stop and several residential areas were submerged in water. The state government announced relief funds for affected households and plans to reinforce the Ambazari Lake spillway. The heavy rain also damaged retaining walls along the Nag River.
