Nagpur: A convicted inmate's attempt to smuggle marijuana into Central Prison by concealing it inside his slippers was foiled during a routine check on Tuesday. Prison staff detected the contraband near the main entrance search cell of the jail.
The accused was identified as Kesari Dhole (31), a resident of Tumsar in Bhandara district. Jail officials recovered 39gm marijuana-like substance hidden inside his slipper during the inspection.
Jail constable Bhagwat Kohale (57) detected the substance, which emitted a strong odour of marijuana. Police said the seized ganja was valued at Rs1,000, while the pair of slippers was worth Rs100, taking the total value of seized items to Rs1,100.
Based on a complaint and a letter from the superintendent of prisons, Dhantoli police have registered a case under relevant laws. The accused is already serving a sentence in the jail.
Authorities have launched a probe to determine how the narcotic substance was smuggled into the prison premises.
