City’s Midnight Tryst With Ambedkar On His Jayanti
Nagpur: A wave of devotion marked Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti across the city, with thousands gathering at Deekshabhoomi. The celebrations began at midnight on April 14 at Samvidhan Square, where chants of ‘Jai Bhim' reverberated alongside booming firecrackers, setting the tone for the day.As the clock struck 12, thousands converged at Samvidhan Square. The midnight gathering drew people from across the city, creating a charged yet reverential atmosphere to mark the birth anniversary of the architect of the Constitution.The Deekshabhoomi premises, wearing navy blue hues, witnessed a steady influx of devotees from across Maharashtra and neighbouring states. Floral tributes were paid to the Dr BR Ambedkar statue, while inside the stupa premises, Buddhist monks led prayers. Recitation of Tri Sharan and Panchsheel formed a key part of the celebration, drawing large participation. More than 200 people donated blood at Deekshabhoomi as part of the celebration.Apart from the central event at Deekshabhoomi, Ambedkar Jayanti was observed across various parts with equal enthusiasm. Several localities organised rallies, cultural programmes and tribute meetings. The day saw community-led initiatives such as blood donation camps, witnessing participation from youth groups and social organisations.
Community service initiatives were organised at Ambedkar Chowk, CA Road, Wardhaman Nagar, to mark the occasion. The programme included the distribution of food and ice cream, spreading joy among children and residents alike.A blood donation and eye check-up camp was conducted in many areas, encouraging citizens to contribute towards saving lives. Several volunteers and donors actively participated in the noble cause, reflecting the spirit of unity and service.LED screens installed at Deekshabhoomi screened rare visuals and speeches of Dr Ambedkar, allowing visitors to engage with his legacy throughout the day. Devotees queued patiently for hours to pay respect, with the turnout once again running into thousands, consistent with previous years.The evening saw speakers, including Dr DRS Shekhar, scientist Anoop Kumar, Dhamma speaker Akash Khobragade and Bhadant Dhamma Sarthi, who reflected on the life and the legacy of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Deekshabhoomi. They highlighted the continued relevance of Dr BR Ambedkar's ideals in today's society, stressing the importance of education, constitutional values, and social equality. Drawing from Ambedkar's journey, the speakers emphasised lessons of resilience, rational thought and inclusivity, urging people to uphold and carry forward his vision of a just and equitable society.
