BJP Converts Civic Polls Into a Show of Power in Vidarbha Under Fadnavis
Nagpur: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched an aggressive, leadership-driven campaign across Vidarbha for municipal corporation elections, turning the contest into a high-visibility demonstration of political strength. At the centre of this effort is CM Devendra Fadnavis, whose packed schedule of rallies and public engagements set the tone for the BJP's campaign in the region.Fadnavis addressed three rallies in Nagpur on Tuesday and two on Thursday, along with a talk show titled ‘Tarri Poha with Deva Bhau' with Marathi actors Spruha Joshi and Bharat Ganeshpure. His appearances were choreographed to reinforce the BJP's urban outreach, blending formal rallies with informal public programmes aimed at connecting with core voter groups. The strategy reflected the party's confidence following the Mahayuti alliance's sweeping victory in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections.
The campaign was further bolstered by the active participation of DyCM Eknath Shinde, who addressed a rally in Amravati, signalling unity within the ruling alliance. BJP state President and revenue minister Chandrashekar Bawankule also toured key constituencies, while state BJP President Ravindra Chavan was scheduled to address a major public meeting in Amravati and Nagpur on Thursday, but he did not turn up. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar was scheduled to address a rally in Amravati on Friday.Adding to the momentum, PM Narendra Modi is set to address multiple rallies in Mumbai on Sunday. Union minister Nitin Gadkari, another heavyweight politician from the BJP, is set to address rallies from Friday in Kalamna.Political observers said this aggressive posture contrasted sharply with the BJP's opponents and reflected confidence rooted in its recent electoral performance and governance record. Importantly, the saffron party also received support from its parent organisation, the RSS, which has its headquarters in Nagpur. The party performed exceedingly well in the recent municipal council and Nagar Panchayats polls last month, where it emerged as the biggest winner. In Vidarbha, particularly in Nagpur, the BJP is banking heavily on the developmental narrative associated with Fadnavis and Gadkari, highlighting infrastructure upgrades, urban connectivity projects and civic amenities. "The BJP is treating these elections as a continuation of the assembly verdict," an observer said, noting that the party's booth-level machinery and cadre mobilisation remained far ahead of rivals. With the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde firmly aligned, the BJP entered the civic polls with a cohesive alliance and unmistakable dominance on the ground, especially in Vidarbha's urban centres.
