An ICU doctor is stepping into one of America’s toughest political battles. Dr Tina Shah, an Indian-American physician from New Jersey, has entered the Democratic primary race for the state’s 7th Congressional District and raised more than one million dollars in campaign funds without corporate PAC support. The district is politically competitive and seen as a key battleground for control of the US House of Representatives. Shah is seeking to challenge Republican Congressman Tom Kean Junior, positioning herself as a healthcare-first candidate at a time when medical costs and public health funding remain hot-button issues. With experience in both the Obama and Biden administrations, Shah says her decision to run comes from frontline experience in intensive care units, where she has witnessed the strain on patients and healthcare workers alike. As the Democratic primary approaches, all eyes are on whether her outsider profile and medical background can reshape the race.
