Alert Cops Ignore Duty Turf To Foil Woman, Daughter Suicide

Nagpur: Displaying quick-thinking and humane approach, two constables posted at Bajaj Nagar police station crossed over into the jurisdiction of Ambazari police to prevent a suicide attempt by woman-daughter duo at Ambazari Lake. The timely intervention by two beat marshals averted a potential tragedy triggered by family dispute and financial problems.Bajaj Nagar police station constables Narendra Kewate and Pankaj Rathod were on duty as beat marshals when they received a call at around 10.50am on Friday alerting about regarding two unknown women attempting suicide at Ambazari Lake.Police personnel are mandated to act only within the jurisdiction of their police stations. But assessing the gravity of the situation, Kewate and Rathod ignored the jurisdictional boundaries and rushed to the lake coming under Ambazari police station. Upon reaching Ambazari Lake, the cops found two women — a mother aged about 40 years and her 22-year-old daughter — standing on the lake bank, crying in distress. Displaying exceptional presence of mind and counselling skills, the beat marshals engaged the women, residents of the Rameshwari area, in conversation. They patiently listened to their grievances, took both into confidence, and convinced them to abandon their suicidal plans."The family had deposited Rs5 lakh in the nursing course for the 22-year-old daughter. But the younger woman wasn't interested in the nursing course and preferred working at a beauty parlour. This triggered the rift," said a cop.After normalising the situation, the marshals contacted the women's relatives and called them to the spot for immediate support. Since the incident occurred within the limits of Ambazari police station, the beat marshals informed the concerned police station and handed over the mother-daughter duo for further legal action and counselling.Bajaj Nagar senior police inspector Chetan Chauhan said the duo were about to end life. "Our constables convinced them not to take the drastic step," said Chauhan."This incident highlights the dedication of Nagpur police personnel who prioritise human lives over bureaucratic boundaries," said Chauhan.
